Art Attack: April 2013's Coolest Covers

-If I were making up a list of dream characters I wanted Paolo Rivera to draw, Sleepwalker would likely not be on it, but given his surreal design and Paolo's knack for making fine art out of the unusual, it's a great fit.

-That Pat Gleason Batman is one you could plaster across consumer products, posters, wallpapers, etc. for years to come. It just encapsulates the character perfectly and looks cool as heck. There are a million ways to draw Batman, and to come up with an "on model" version seems wrong, but that's about what I'd picture.

-I've said it before, but I would really really like to see Dustin Nguyen drawing more stuff, y'know? Is he still doing interiors on the Batman Beyond digital book?

-No idea what Dark Horse Presents is about this month, but Dave Johnson really is an outside-the-box master.

-Mike Del Mundo is a revelation, man. He does clever and inventive two different ways this month: funny on Deadpool Killustrated and more cerebral on X-Men Legacy. This guy is only going to get better too. I want to see inside his brain.

-I love Mike Allred's re-imagining of the Yancy Street Gang so much.

-If you're gonna do an homage, homage the best (see: Mighty Skullkickers).

-It may be a different Nova, but it's still a kick to see Mark Bagley drawing a Human Rocket.

-What could be more Ryan Stegman than doing an homage to yourself and a cover you drew a couple months ago? Stegman, you beautiful genius.

-Who/what did Thanos just eat/kill?

-Young Avengers #4 by Jamie McKelvie is currently the wallpaper on my work computer.

Art Attack: March 2013's Coolest Covers

-BOTH Angel & Faith covers are fantastic! Steve Morris' main one pulls a neat trick with the logo and the layers, Rebekah Isaacs' is super fun (plus I love Archie)!

-Phil Noto can do as complex a piece of art as you want, but he's also often at his best with the simple iconic splash, as demonstrated nicely in his take on Wolverine for Astonishing X-Men.

-Mike Del Mundo is probably the fastest rising up and coming star when it comes to cover artists in the game right now. His X-Men Legacy work is beautiful, clever and different every month. The idea of using Legion's power signature as Blindfold's literal blindfold looks so seamless, but how would you think of that? On the flip side, his Avengers Arena is playful and a little dangerous at the same time. He's only going to get better too.

-Patrick Gleason makes it with his Batman & Robin if for no other reason than he worked his signature into the bats in the background. Nice touch.

-I can't objectively say it because I do know the back story, but that image of Hope and Cable by Salvador Larroca on Cable and X-Force is striking even if you have no idea who they are, yeah?

-I have no idea what Dia De Los Muertos is about (ok, I have a hunch), but I feel like Riley Rossmo's cover grabbed me by the eyeballs and won't let go.

-Two questions for Mark Brooks: How did you come up with that idea for the Fearless Defenders "toy" cover and then how the heck did you do it?

-Andrea Sorrentino is another one to watch, and it's neat to see two vastly different genres represented with Green Arrow and I, Vampire.

-Hawkeye #9 by David Aja is the wallpaper on my computer at work right now.

-The "breaking the logo" gimmick is a tried and true one, but it's the latter part for a reason. Using Magneto to crunch it up with his powers is a pretty novel spin by Chris Bachalo on Uncanny X-Men.

-The subtle use of scales for texture adds a lot to Cliff Chiang's Wonder Woman cover.
