However, comics are also about getting people excited, or, to be a bit more to the point, about marketing. Those of us in the business try to generate enthusiasm about the product we're producing any way we can so these stories have a fair shot to make their impression.
When it comes to solicitations, Rickey works tirelessly on the words side of the equation and does a great job of it, but no question, when you're dealing with stuff as far out as he is, the images help a lot. No question, a great cover can draw somebody in to read a comic they might not have otherwise given a second look.
(Hey, I totally just spent three hours in the ER because I was having chest pains. Turns out it was just bad indigestion, but it hurt like hell. Right back blogging though--HARDCORE)
The major companies released their solicits for February 2010 last week, and because I dig things that are pretty (and am kinda lazy), I figured I'd throw together a little gallery of the covers that caught my eye. Roll tape...
Obviously this is but a sampling of the awesome covers coming in three months--please share your own favorites!
I too thought it was a particularly strong month for covers and pulled many of the same jpegs when I went through the solicits.
ReplyDeleteAdi Granov also had a great showing with 3 Marvel covers, particularly this Steranko-inspired beauty:

I've been enjoying seeing Adi on non-Iron Man covers a lot.
ReplyDelete1. How rad are those Adam Kubert covers lately? I dunno if it's him leaving a LOT more room than normal for logos or if he's cropping as a design choice, but his movement to focusing on thirds now has me all excited.
ReplyDelete2. By the looks of the cover to Brave and the Bold #32 - and this is just me guessing - I think Etrigan and Aquaman fucking team up under water to find...heaven? BAD. ASS.
3. Ben is wrong. My writing is strong enough to not need pictures.
4. My comments in No. 3 above are bullshit.
5. I just want it on record that i don't think of myself as being "in the business."
Rickey's in the business of being a love bandit!
ReplyDeleteI love the Amazing Spider-man # 620, because it looks simple, with basic colors, but so idealistic at the same time. Apart it seem to me so innovator.
