I don't necessarily have a problem with Michael Cera playing the same character over and over again, but if he is, he needs to pick movies in which he is the straight man to crazy, funny people. Otherwise, he needs to mature into a more credible leading man, because I honestly feel like he hurt this movie more than helped. The script was good, the whole movie had an earnest charm and everything really clicked during the last half hour, but the first hour really suffered from Cera being a square peg in a round hole. Ari Graynor was hilarious and the cameos were great, but I couldn't help leaving the theater wanting to have enjoyed what I'd just seen much more than I had.
Bonus thought: I didn't pick up on it, because I'm particularly dense, but after the movie my fiancee pointed out how many surface similarities there were between this and Scott Pilgrim, also scheduled to star Michael Cera. Hmm...
there were some awkward moments in this movie that were hard to get past... such as every time that gum was passed around (yuck!)
